WannaCry Ransomware has hit the world. I know some peeps out there were arrogant enough to believe that the U.S. wouldn’t be affected by this super-bug, but YES….it’s here too. Now, we had a bit of a head start on protecting our systems due to the virus hitting across the pond first, but make no mistake; it’s ramping up, and 2.0 was supposedly released out into the world this past weekend.
Hospitals, banking systems, universities, telecom companies, and large corporations are just a few industries hit across 150 countries. Reportedly over 200,000 individual computers have been infected.
Is this the start of something bigger? I’ve heard talk that this was nothing more that a beta test to see how vulnerable we really are.
Is our electrical grid vulnerable? Can our banking systems survive an attack worse than WannaCry?
Scary questions.
Then, this happens…
President Trump signed an executive order May 11, 2017, ordering the “STRENGTHENING THE CYBERSECURITY OF FEDERAL NETWORKS AND CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE.” You can read it here.
I’ve read several prepper fiction books over the years, and scenarios like what are playing out in real time in the world are now coming to life.
The vulnerabilities of our banks, hospitals, and power grids could very well be the downfall of our nation.
Yes…lot’s of questions and no real answers. Go figure! As much as our government keeps us in the dark, I’m not surprised.
NPR put out an article this morning about this bug and Microsoft’s accusations to the NSA. Pretty interesting stuff.
